EHS Apprentice

About the role:

The Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) apprentice will work with the UK EHS Team to ensure that legal and company EHS requirements are implemented.  The EHS apprentice will engage with all aspects of the organisation to support the embedment of a positive safety culture that ensures a safe working environment is provided for all employees.  This will be achieved by inspiring and influencing others to see the benefit of working responsibly, understanding the legal framework and showing how safety, health and environmental management can enhance operational activities.


 As part of the apprenticeship you will learn on the job as well as completing a relevant qualification. The duration is up to 24 months and on successful completion of your apprenticeship we expect you to have gained the skills, confidence and knowledge to join the team on a permanent basis.


About the EHS team at Abcam:

The EHS team is a small team which provides essential support to the business to ensure a safe working environment is provided for all employees whether working in the office area or in our higher risk areas such as the laboratory or logistics areas.  The EHS team ensure that the site is compliant to local EHS regulations as well as to Abcam global policies.

Apprentice key areas of responsibility:

  • Near Misses/Accidents – reporting of near misses and accidents, following up and ensuring that corrective and preventative actions have been completed.

  • Be part of the in-house inspections and Internal Audits, collecting and documenting non-conformances, follow up and ensuring that actions are completed

  • Support and build on the existing EHS Management System for documents and records.   

  • Carry out minor EHS Training such as Induction, DSE practices, Manual Handling.

  • Assisting the EHS team in investigations for the various streams of non-conformances to get to root cause for preventative actions. Collecting evidence, making recommendations and updating the relevant EHS Tracker.

  • Managing the EHS Email post box ensuring all postings are acknowledged and queries are resolved

  • Administrating the EHS Discover web page and display screens around the building.


What we are looking for:

We are looking for a team player that is proactive and eager to learn. Someone with the potential to grow EHS skills and that is willing to progress with Abcam as we build on the foundations of EHS.

Requirements and Experience:

  • Good communication skills – to be able to contribute effectively in both spoken and written styles, ability to communicate on all levels of the business

  • Work effectively in a team – be able to work with others and lead by example in a collaborative and non- confrontational way.

  • Contribute to the positive EHS culture; positively influence safe behaviour. Be able to identify areas for continuous improvements.

  • PC literate – competent user of Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Eligibility would be 5 GCSE grade C and above (include English. Maths and Sciences)
  • Organised and methodical
  • Determined & sees things through to completion
