Senior Scientist, Conjugation

About the Role:


Reporting to the Group Head Biochemistry, the Senior Scientist will be responsible for establishing and optimising conjugation methods, purification and state-of-the-art analytics. This will include a wide range of conjugates to either peptides or proteins.

We are looking for someone with a chemistry/biochemistry background and experience in conjugation. You should be an independent scientist who can work in close collaboration with molecular biologists, protein scientists and cell scientists.  

Job Responsibilities:


  • Lead design and development of conjugation chemistry for a variety of conjugates

  • Synthesise, purify and establish efficient analytical characterization of peptide conjugates

  • Ensure robust processes with required throughput
  • Formulate strategies and execute on appropriate timescales
  • Communicate clearly with Programme Managers and the Conjugation team, providing updates on milestones, agreed deliverables, necessary documentation and clearly presented experimental results to support ongoing and completed work

  • Document experiments and procedures in laboratory notebooks, analysing and presenting experimental data within internal meetings, and participate in the drafting and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and risk assessments.

  • Role model working in a safe and efficient working environment in the laboratory and ensure the safety of your colleagues and visitors. Support team adherence to all health and safety guidelines.


About you

This position would suit a hardworking, detail-orientated person with a positive can-do attitude who is able to work independently as well as function effectively in a fast-paced and sociable team environment.

You will have excellent knowledge of aqueous conjugation/bio-conjugation and non-aqueous conjugation chemistry, purification strategies and associated analytics such as HPLC and LC/MS. Experience with antibodies or peptides is highly desirable, as is familiarity with peptide synthesis techniques and adjacent areas.

You will have strong analytical rigour: the ability to recognise opportunities, apply good scientific rationale to design experiments, analyse the data and make accurate decisions within the context of a fast-paced, agile business.

You will be able to work on numerous tasks and/or projects simultaneously at a high degree of complexity.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • A BS Degree in chemistry or biochemistry
  • A PhD or equivalent research experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industrial/academic experience in delivering projects to tight deadlines
  • A track record of delivering successful innovation projects and products
  • Familiarity with trades secrets and intellectual property, providing relevant and timely information to legal counsel
  • Commercial experience in Biotech industry
  • Motivated and enthusiastic team player with strong problem-solving capabilities
  • Collaborative worker, ideally with experience of working with numerous international business partners/teams
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required
